The recent Cancer Awareness Session at the Red Roof Centre in Wakefield provided an important opportunity to highlight liver health and the availability of viral hepatitis testing, supported by the presence of the Community Local Health Checks (CLHC) team and Hepatitis C Trust (HCT) Peers.
Although not leading the event, the CLHC team and HCT peers made a valuable contribution by hosting an information table staffed by three team members who were available throughout the session to speak with attendees. Their approachable setup encouraged people to stop by, ask questions, and explore the resources on offer.
The table featured clear, accessible information on liver health, including risk factors, early symptoms of liver disease, and practical steps individuals can take to protect their liver. Attendees also had the chance to learn more about hepatitis B and hepatitis C, how these viruses are transmitted, and why early testing is essential particularly for those who may be unaware they are at risk.
CLHC staff provided friendly, informal conversations to help people understand the benefits of liver health checks including viral hepatitis testing, what the testing process involves, and where support is available. Their presence helped reduce stigma and encouraged open discussion about conditions that often go unnoticed until they become serious.
HCT peers added further depth by engaging with community members, sharing lived experiences, and helping create a welcoming environment where people felt comfortable discussing their health and offering hepatitis testing.
By bringing liver health and viral hepatitis information directly into a community setting, the session helped raise awareness, promote early detection, and empower individuals to take proactive steps toward better wellbeing.
