Love Your Liver Week officially began today in West Yorkshire, with the Community Liver Health Checks Team (‘Liver Buddies’) a dedicated group of nurses, peer supporters, ODN staff and volunteers came together in Leeds to kick off four days of vital public health engagement. Set up on Briggate in the heart of the city, the team prepared to welcome the public, answer questions, and offer free liver health checks to anyone wanting to understand their risk.
The mobile health unit stood ready as the Liver Buddies gathered for a quick briefing before the day began. Their mission was simple but powerful: to help the people of Leeds learn more about liver health, spot early signs of liver disease, and understand how small lifestyle changes can make a big difference.
A key part of the day’s offer was testing for Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C, delivered by peers from The Hepatitis C Trust. Their peerâled approach provided reassurance, reduced stigma, and encouraged open conversations about viral hepatitis. People stopping by were able to access quick, confidential testing and speak directly with individuals who understand the realities of living with and overcoming hepatitis.
Day One brought a strong sense of energy and collaboration. Nurses and clinical staff provided expert guidance, while peer workers and volunteers offered lived experience, encouragement, and support. ODN staff ensured smooth coordination, helping the Liver Buddies deliver a welcoming and accessible service for everyone who stopped by.
Throughout the day, passersâby paused to chat, ask questions, and take advantage of the free liver health assessments and BBV testing available. Many expressed surprise at how common liver disease and viral hepatitis can be, and how often they go unnoticed until they become serious. That’s exactly why Love Your Liver Week exists, to bring liver health into everyday conversation and empower communities with knowledge.
