‘Together for health. Stand with science: community testing, education and support’
To mark World Hepatitis Day, teams from the Hepatitis C Trust (HCT), WISH – Spectrum Health, the Operational Delivery Network (ODN) and Viral Hepatitis Nurses joined colleagues at the Community Awareness Project (CAP) in Wakefield for a focused day of outreach, testing and health promotion.
The team promoted the World Hepatitis Day 2026 theme, “Together for health. Stand with science.” They encouraged people to learn more about hepatitis testing, treatment and prevention, while helping reduce barriers, fears and myths about accessing care.
Testing and follow-up support
During the session, the team engaged with around 25 people, 10 of whom were tested for viral hepatitis, HIV and syphilis. Follow-up support was also arranged for anyone needing further appointments, blood tests or additional care.
Translation support was provided where needed, helping people understand the information and make informed choices about their care.
Health and wellbeing advice
Alongside testing, visitors received practical advice and brief interventions, including:
- harm reduction information
- reinfection risk advice
- needle exchange service information
- support to access treatment
- alcohol brief interventions
- encouragement to seek medical review for wider physical health concerns, where needed.
The event also helped people feel more confident sharing key messages with friends and associates, reinforcing that testing is simple, treatment is available and support is in place.
Partnership in action
ODN Nurse Associate Sheila led the outreach session, supported by HCT Peer Lead Brendon, Elaine from WISH-Spectrum Health, and Sue and Kevin from CAP. The event was well attended, with strong community engagement and positive interest in the resources available, including keyrings and refreshments offered as testing incentives.
World Hepatitis Day is an important opportunity to raise awareness, but the commitment to finding, testing and supporting people continues year-round. The event highlighted the value of partnership working and the impact of bringing services directly into welcoming community spaces.
