
Overview
The Viral Hepatitis Nurses team at Leeds Teaching Hospitals provides a comprehensive service for patients with Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C. The team combines hospital-based care with outreach and in-reach models to improve access and equity, particularly for underserved populations.
Service Model
The service is delivered by a dedicated team of Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNS) and is supported by Pharmacy and Consultants from:
- Hepatology
- Infectious Diseases
- Virology
Key components include:
- Weekly multidisciplinary team meeting
- Medical clinic held Thursday afternoons (Fibroscan available as required)
- Outreach clinics in Leeds, Dewsbury, and Wakefield
- In-reach clinics across HMP Leeds, Newhall, Wakefield, and Wealstun
- Hospital-based care at Leeds Teaching Hospitals
Hepatitis C Elimination Programme
In alignment with NHS England’s ‘Hepatitis C Elimination’ programme, the service also delivers nurse-led clinics at:
Drug and Alcohol services:
- Forward Leeds hubs (Leeds)
- Care Grow Live (Dewsbury)
- All four HMPs in West Yorkshire
The team works closely with:
- Hepatitis C Trust peers
- Community Awareness Project (CAP) in Wakefield
- The Crypt in Leeds
To further enhance accessibility, the service has access to a clinical vehicle supported by the Community Liver Health Checks project, enabling the CNS team to visit patients closer to their home address.

The Viral Hepatitis Nurses team remains committed to delivering best practice and optimising treatment outcomes, working in close partnership with Consultant Hepatologists and multidisciplinary colleagues to ensure high-quality, patient-centred care across all settings.

Appointments in Leeds
GPs are encouraged to refer all new patients with hepatitis B or C to the Viral Hepatitis Service via Choose and Book (Viral Hepatitis).

For patients with hepatitis C (either untreated or newly diagnosed) who reside in the Dewsbury or Wakefield area:
- Please refer directly to the CNS team at Leeds Teaching Hospitals, as Mid Yorkshire Hospitals currently do not offer hepatitis C treatment.
